Poorer families

The Central Committee had instructed the Politburo to examine within the next few days the possibility of improving the financial situation of families with lowergrade salaries and large numbers of children whose budgets were hardest hit by the food price rises. He appealed for normal, uninterrupted work and told those workers, who allowed their emotions to carry them away and stopped work, that their action was fraught with great danger to the country —"even though we understand, that the motives of this action were most frequently honest.”

The new party leader was referring to striking shipyard workers in Gdynia, Szczecin and other Baltic coastal towns which erupted in arson, looting and street clashes last week.

There have been persistent reports of strikes and goslow movements elsewhere in the country, including Warsaw, in support of workers’ economic grievances. The Polish news agency P.A.P. said that there was an atmosphere of Christmas in the air yesterday in Gdansk and Gdynia and in Sopot, which lies between them.

It reported intensified traffic, especially in shopping centres and said normal activity was being restored in key industries.
