$4000 given for care of aged
A cheque for $4OOO from the J. R. McKenzie Trust was yesterday presented to the chairman of the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council (Dr H. R. Donald) for distribution among 10 organisations in Christchurch which provide homes for the aged.
The money, which has been allocated according to the number of beds in each home was given to the Anglican Social Service Council, the Archer Memorial Home run by the Baptist Church, the Langford House Committee, the Mary Potter Hospital, the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission, Nazareth House, the Presbyterian Social Service Association, the Salvation Army Social Service, Windsor House and the Seventh - day Adventist Church. Mr J. L. Kerr, chairman of the Christchurch J. R. McKenzie Trust Committee who presented the cheque, said that to a large extent the administration of the trust in New Zealand was done by Rotary clubs, and the gift for aged people’s homes in Christchurch had been made on the recommendation of .the Christchurch Rotary Club. Last year $140,000 was distributed from the trust, he said. Of this amount $14,700 was given for the care of the aged, $56,750 for youth work, $23,300 for aid to children, $3150 for education, $30,200 for welfare work and $12,000 for research. Dr Donald said- that the gift was particularly welcome at present when many homes for the aged were finding it hard to meet increasing costs.
