Nelson trek completed
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, December 13. A Nelson watersider, Mi Arthur Curtis, , aged 37, completed his 100-mile walk of the Wangapeka and Heaphy Tracks in north-west Nelson in 41 hours 47 minutes; more than six hours ahead of his 48-hour target. Mr Curtis, and his brothers, Max Curtis, aged 44, and Ross Curtis, aged 38, left the Dart River at the beginning of the Wangapeka Track at midnight, and finished the trek at the Brown River, Golden Bay, at 5.47 p.m. yesterday. The walk was made to raise funds for the Nelson branch of the Crippled Children’s Society. It is hoped to raise more than $5OOO. The brothers’ actual walking time was 30 hours and 27 minutes, which they attribute to the excellent assistance from support parties. They consider they might have done the journey faster, but they did not take any risks: "We followed the fundamentals of trampingsafety,” Mr Arthur Curtis said.
