WON WELL IN NEW COLOURS
"Buy a horse for me that is not too dear," Mr John McCallum, of Sydney, instructed the Christchurch blodstock agent, Mr D. B. Clarkson, while on a business visit to New Zealand recently. Last Tuesday, Mr McCallum became the owner of the Ric-carton-trained Moonfleet, and on Saturday this three-year-old triumphed first time out in his new colours in the Hororata Racing Club’s Sandown Hack Handicap.
Mr McCallum cleared his out-' lay immediately by placing a substantial bet on Moonfleet, which paid $18.60 for a win. Moonfleet showed ability to win on Saturday. He missed the start slightly, bpt finished generously in the hands of the stable apprentice, P. Smith, to beat Bannock by half a head. Mr McCallum, who returned to Sydney earlier last week, will leave Moonfleet in C. C. McCarthy’s Riccarton stable for the rest of the season.
