Old grey mare left speedsters
The Otago breeder-owner, Mr J. A. A. Reid, has had some rewarding moments at Riccarton with the produce of his old grey mare. Smartly. Modern Imp was a surprise Great Easter Handicap winner in the Reid colours in 1965. Last year Lady Mellay made a memorable first appearance at Riccarton in winning the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Irwell Handicap by eight lengths, following up with a victory by nine lengths in the Pioneer Handicap on the filial day of that New Zealand Cup meeting. On Saturday, Lady Mellay’s two-year-old sister, Smart Mellay, justified favouritism by winning the Hororata Racing Club’s Ribotlight Handicap. She tracked the American-
owned Abdi Cat closely for the first three furlongs, was jricely clear going into the final furlong, and won handily by threequarters of a length from her most solidly-backed rival, Awo» cato. Awocato was a solid finisher, and might have been a big threat to his Wingatui conqueror, only for becoming unbalanced fairly close to home. Abdi Cat was a weakening third, but much superior to any of the others. 1
