C.A.R.P. sees anomalies
(N.Z. Press Association} WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. The president of the Campaign against Rising Prices, in Wellington (Mrs C. Kelly) said that the great weakness of the price-freeze was that very basic foods—meat, fish, vegetables and most fruit—were exempt “Only the retail margins in these goods are frozen,” she said.
“This limitation is already being exploited in Auckland, where the wholesale price of fish rose this week, bringing a consequent retail increase of l-2c per lb.” “The major Auckland-based fish wholesaler, Sanfords, Ltd, increased its profit this year by 41.5 per cent to a record profit and yet it is pushing prices up during this period of price-freeze and is legally free to do so.” If the Government was in earnest about its price-freeze it would surely make it apply to wholesalers and retailers alike in the sale of these essential goods, said Mrs Kelly.
