Provisional leadership (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) DAMASCUS, November 20. Ahmed al-Khatib, the secretary of the provisional national leadership of the ruling Ba’ath party has been appointed provisional head of State of Syria. He succeeds Dr Nureddin al-Attassi, who was overthrown in a bloodless coup last Friday. Mr Khatib will hold office until a People’s Assembly meets to elect a new Head of State. The provisional leadership also announced officially the appointment of LieutenantGeneral Hafez al-Assad as Prime Minister, and said that he had begun consultations on the formation of a transitional government. General Assad led the military wing of the Ba’ath Party in its overthrow of the civilian wing in last week’s coup.
