N.Z. PRINT COUNCIL MEMBERS EXHIBIT
Work by two members of the New Zealand Print Council, Vivian Lynn, of South Canterbury, and Marilyn Webb, of Auckland, is being displayed at Graphic Gallery, 152 England Street. Vivian Lynn exhibits 25 colour prints and seven etchings. Her colour prints are taken from cardboard plates and are designed to serve a primarily decorative function. To this extent they are very successful, particularly when a full range of tone between light and dark as in “Ether Teeming Weighty Happening,” “Tortuosa" and and “Talone” is used. In “Indicia” and “Orcus,” however, the rich pattern of texture and line becomes barely discernable through a general similarity of tone in each colour used. Her etching technique shows strong influences of Barry Cleavin and, while her achievements are technically impressive,
she as yet appears to be searching for something to say in this medium. Marilyn Webb uses hill forms throughout her 17 intaglio lino prints and five pencil drawings. She explores her subject in line, with small tonal changes, and amazing economy, taking and using only what is essential and discarding the irrelevant. She achieves tonal changes by relief printing and wiping the block in a similar process to that used in etching. This results in a highly effective form of modelling and the creation of a deep illusion of space. Her drawings are closely related to her prints but with a pencil technique that is fully sympathetic to the change of medium. The exhibition can be viewed by appointment and will remain open until November 24. —G.T.M.
