Cricket Youth WEEKLY REVIEW

The Junior Advisory Board’s Saturday morning competition for primary schoolboys continued on Saturday again in excellent cricketing weather. The selectors of the representative team were in the throes of gathering a squad for training purposes. This squad is not the representative team, and players anxious to gain selection for the tournament in Nelson in midJanuary and who have been excluded from the original squad could force their way into the Canterbury side with good performances in Club golf CHRISTCHURCH LADIII. the next few weeks. The Canterbury team has performed well up to expectations at tournaments in cent years and consequently the selectors do not regard “name" players as necessarily the best cricketers to represent the province. The opportunities are assuredly there for players who are determined and perform well. The most interesting of the games in the previous round was that between East-Shirley B and Lancaster Park in the A grade. After a determined fight back, Lancaster Park left East to score 48 second innings runs for victory in thirty minutes. Thanks to some bold hitting from Stuart Wells this target was reached, but Park captured four wickets in the course of the innings. Although East wins much of the credit for this exciting match, the Park batsmen who held out so desperately and the bowlers and fieldsmen who forced East to “beat the clock” also deserve some praise for their fighting spirit. The St Thomas of Canterbury A team was seen in action at Hospital Comer for the first time this season on Saturday. As always, this team drew attention for its neat appearance and enthusiastic approach to the game. Martin O'Connor and Noel Bearman who opened the batting for St Thomas’s looked an industrious pair whose partnership was marked by some excellent calling and running between wickets. For the High School Old Boys’ opposition, Pat Hodgson bowling medium pace cutters was accurate and kept the batsmen on the defensive with some very lively fielding off his own bowling.

Another A grade opening pair, Graham Moore and lan Morrison of St Albans, , appeared to have a good ' sense of understanding. Both players were sound defenders and yet managed to Score with the occasional well-timed shot. However they were hindered considerably by some hostile left-arm bowling from Michael Trower and. Wayne Higgins, the opening attack for their Sydenham opponents. The Riccarton C grade team was kept busy in the field with a number of snicks and lobbed defensive shots from the opposing batsmen. These shots were partly the result of a rather uneven and grassy pitch, and also partly a result of good exploitation of this wicket by Peter Richardson, a right - arm medium pace bowler who, despite a wide on his first delivery, settled down and attacked the batsmen steadily. The Xavier C team enjoys the distinction this season of providing junior cricket with its customary pair of twins. Steven O’Kane and his brother Terence are both enjoying a successful season at the crease. The former had scored IS out of his team’s total of 45, including three splendid boundaries and the latter, with a top score of 20 this season, looked to be headed for many more runs. Another pair of batsmen, bearing the same surnames were batting well. Phillip and Duncan Harris came together when their West University A team had lost a wicket without a run on the board and were still together when the total passed thirty. Both players hit the ball firmly on either side of the wicket and gave the bowlers little chance -to dictate terms. Also in this West team, Stuart Chalmers fielded well on the ground and took a splendid two handed catch from a skied ball, which was an object lesson to young cricketers as he calmly positioned himself and held the catch. Concentration is an asset which few junior batsmen possess; the lack of it is not a fault in that it takes experience and maturity to master the art. However those junior cricketers with this gift certainly stand out. Garth Johnson of the St Albans A team showed such a willingness to discipline himself and examine the bowling carefully before attempting to attack the bowling. The runs he made showed him to be a thoughtful cricketer with a good temperament for the game.
