NUCLEAR SHIELD
Guarantee to Aust. GV.Z. Press Assn. — Copyright) ADELAIDE, Nov. 17. The United States had already given Australia a guarantee to provide her with a nuclear shield if a nuclear power threatened her freedom, the Australian Foreign Minister (Mr William McMahon), said last night. President Nixon, he said, had stated that the United States would provide a shield if a nuclear power threatened the freedom of any allied nation whose survival she considered vital to her own security, and to the security of the Asian region. Speaking at a luncheon election campaign meeting, Mr McMahon said that arrangements to establish joint United States - Australian bases at Woomera and Pine Gap had been negotiated under the Anzus Treaty, and their essential purpose was to contribute to the defence of Australia and of the free world. "The United States has asked us to keep details of the Woomera and Pine Gap installations secret, and has given us a guarantee to provide us with a nuclear shield if a nuclear power threatens our freedom,” the Foreign Minister said.
