WELLINGTON.
Not for the first time, the 72-hole, $7OOO Caltex golf tournament, beginning at Paraparaumu today, appears likely to be a battle between the Australians, K. D. G. Nagle and P. W. Thomson.
In the absence of R. J. Charles, at present on holiday with his wife and family in Hawaii, the way seems clear for Nagle and Thomson yet again to dispute the major prize money. They showed there had been no decline in their golfing powers by finishing first and second equal, respectively in the $lO,OOO tournament at Newcastle, New South Wales, last week-end. Between them, they have dominated the Caltex. Nagle, who will be 50 next month, won the tournament outright in 1960, 1964 and last year, and in 1966 shared first place with Thomson. Thomson, whose game looked in fine shape yesterday, won in 1955, 1959 and 1965, and has twice tied for first. The strongest challengers to the two, in the field of 107 will probably be the Englishman now living in Australia, G. B. Wolstenholme, F. Phillips, G. Marsh (a brother of the new Australian test wicket-keeper, R. Marsh), the South African, R. Cole, and the American, W. Brask. In the absence of Charles and J. M. Lister, the New Zealand attack will be led by A. J. Palmer, W. J. Godfrey and T. Kendall, all of whom
have had successes on the Australian circuit. Two World Cup players have withdrawn, the New Zealander, B. T. Boys and the Thai, Sukree Onsham.
