Long career at sea
The master of the Shaw Savill cargo liner Ceramic, Captain R. G. E. Grant, will retire at the end of this voyage after more than 48 years at sea. His ship is at present at Lyttelton. Captain Grant, aged 64, who lives with his family on a five acre plot in the village of Gosfield, Essex, said that he joined the Shaw Savill and Albion Line in 1922, as a deck boy aboard an earlier ship called the Corinthic. After he had obtained his second mate’s certificate Captain Grant left the company and did not return until he had obtained his master’s certificate. But most of his sea career was with the Shaw Savill and Albion Line, and after serving in many notable ships of this company, he was appointed master of the Afric in 1951, his first command. He has also commanded the Doric, Waiwera, lonic, Corinthic and Cretic. His present ship, the Ceramic, was formerly a passenger cargo vessel but now carries only cargo. Captain Grant hopes to play golf in his retirement. He is also a keen gardener and may even graze a sheep or two.
