Unemployment in Australia
(N'Z Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Nov. 17. The number of registered unemployed in Australia fell by 2,937 last month to 44,788, or about 0.8 per cent of the total labour force. Unfilled vacancies during October rose by 4578 or 10 per cent, compared with 7276 in October of last year. After seasonal adjustment, the number of unemployed at the end of October exceeded unfilled vacancies by 13,622, compared with 15,419 at the end of September. The number receiving unemployment benefit fell by 1101 to 10,282, compared with a decline of 196 to 9942 in October of last year. Unemployment fell in all states except Queensland, where seasonal changes in the meat industry influenced the employment level.
There was a drop in rural unemployment in New South Wales because of drought relief employment.
