Appeal for funds to restore church wall
A fund to restore thei south wall of the 120-year-old Holy Trinity Church at Lyttelton will be launched in Christchurch on Saturday night Because of the state of the wall several paintings by Canon Coates are deteriorating. A restoration committee has been formed consisting of Dr R. S. Duff, Mr P. J. Beaven, Mr G. Kane, Captain J. Cleaver, and members of the church vestry. The committee is seeking $2OOO for temporary restoration, although $4OOO is needed to cover permanent restoration. The appeal will be launched in the Canterbury Society of Arts building on
I Saturday at a function organi ised by the newly-formed New Zealand Water Colourists’ Society, which has taken over the former Guild Incorporated. Speakers win include the president of the Canterbury Society of Arts (Mr J. Oak- ' ley), Judge Archer, on behalf of the guild, and the Rev. J. E. Weir, on behalf of P.E.N. The function wiU be open to the public.
