WINE SHOP LICENCE
Authority for Rangiora It was a marginal case, but Rangiora was entitled to the opportunity of having a win? reseller’s shop, said the chairman (Mr S. T. Barnett), at a sitting of the Licensing Control Commission yesterday, when the commission was asked to determine whether any new wine resellers’ licences were needed in the Hurunui licensing district, and, in particular, at Rangiora. There were adequate facilities in the district said the inspector of licensed premises (Mr D. G. Surridge). Rangiora had four hotels, one wholesaler and five wholesalers delivering to the district There was a good range of New Zealand wines on sale in the town.
In support of the issue of a wine reseller’s licence for Rangiora, Mr G. T. Scott said he represented Maunders Cordials, Ltd, the Rangiora Borough Council and the Rangiora Businessmen’s Association, with support from the Oxford, Ashley and Waipara county councils.
Evidence in support was given by the Town Clerk (Mr R. Ward), Mr J. Gowland, manager of Maunders Cordials, Ltd, and Mrs V. B. Palmer, secretary of the businessmen’s association. Mr B. McClelland, opposing the application for the Canterbury Hotels Association, said he adopted the findings of Mr Surridge. “This is a trifling matter which has given us more concern than the merits deserve, probably,” said Mr Barnett “The decision in your favour, Mr Scott, does not mean an extra to the cordial manufacturer’s business. That will be dealt with by the Licensing Committee, and we will tell the committee we have authorised a licence.”
