Rugby club's milestone
’J'HE Waikari - Hawarden United Rugby Football Club will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the official formation of the “United” club during Easter week-end next year. Present arrangements for the celebrations include a match between Cantabrians and a Hurunui invitation XV at Waikari on the Saturday; an informal social gathering on the Saturday evening; a church parade in the Wai-
kari Hall, and the taking of photographs on the Sunday; matches between the club’s teams and other clubs on the Monday afternoon; and a formal dinner on the Monday evening. When the club was officially constituted as “United” in 1921 it was playing in the North Canterbury competitions, which it joined in the opening year of that sub-union in 1905. The club has a history dating back to at least 1883, when it played under the name of Waikari. Later the naine of Hawarden became associated with the club, and, for a time, teams took the field for alternate matches either as “Waikari” or “Hawarden.” The secretary for the celebrations is Mr Gr Dunster, .Waikari.
