CHANGES IN NIGHTLIFE
Wider choice of venue Selecting a place to dine out in Christchurch is now a more difficult task than it used to be—simply because the choice is so much wider. The growth of the tourist industry has not only meant an increase in the accommodation available but it has also created a demand for entertainment and dining facilities.
The people of Christchurch now have a wide choice of places to go for an evening, whether they want to eat, dance or listen or do all three. The cost of an evening out is not necessarily as expensive as some might think, and certainly by overseas standards costs are low but the standard is good. Many establishments have been operating for many years, but to keep up with modem demands they have redecorated and up-dated their premises to compare well with the numerous new restaurants and hotels that have opened in Christchurch in recent months. The change in licensing hours from 6 pm. closing to 10 p.m. is still being felt by hotels and there must be few’ by now which do not provide music and light entertainment in the evenings. Lounge bars have become much more popular than they were in the “six o’clock swill" days and drinking facilities generally have become much more congenial. Visitors to Christchurch during Carnival Week will find pleasant hotels in all parts of the city and suburbs. Some are practically institutions and others, although recent, have quickly built up a reputation for good service and atmosphere. Bands or other musical entertainment, appearances by live artists, central heating and air conditioning all make hotels more pleasant to spend an evening in. The reduction of the
minimum drinking age to 20 means that more young people patronise hotels with a consequent brightening of entertainment and atmosphere. Restaurants cater for all tastes. Some have subdued, intimate lighting for a romantic atmosphere; others have plenty of light and music. Some rely only on their food and liquors to attract patrons, but there is something for everyone, even if you do have to pay for it sometimes.
