‘Portnoy’s Complaint’
The American novel “Portnoy’s Complaint” was today ruled obscene by a magistrate in Melbourne, who fined the book’s publisher. Penguin Books (Australia), Ltd, a total of $lOO, with $435 costs. But the City Court Magistrate, Mr E. Ross, said that the Philip Roth novel was a work of recognised literary merit and ordered that 414 copies seized by vice squad police should not be destroyed until the publisher had had the opportunity to appeal—Melbourne, November 9.
