‘Up to the stations'

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. Mr Shelton said in an interview that it would be “up to the individual petrol stations” how they would charge the odd half cent on uneven numbers of gallons, but he said “I imagine that it will go up to the nearest half cent.”

He said that the Government price order had determined the increase at 2jc a gallon, and although there was no such coin as half a cent it was not up to the Government to regulate how the odd charge would be made.

“I think that some petrol stations will charge regular customers the extra half cent, but not charge them on other occasions,” he said.

He added that when the price differential was abolished as proposed, the price in the main centres would be increased by Ijc and in main centers at least this would even up the price.
