Car hit by express

A man was killed at 5.45 p.m. on Saturday when the car he was driving collided with the north-bound express at the intersection of State Highway No. 1 and Maronan Road near the Tinwald Saleyards. He was Geoffrey Ernest Davis, aged 22, of Lismore. The police said yesterday that the vehicle driven by Mr Davis was a write-off. The accident delayed the express for 27 minutes. The accident was the second within 24 hours involving a motor vehicle and a railway vehicle on the South Island main trunk line. Just before midnight on Friday three persons were injured when the southbound rail-car was in a collision with a car at Carey’s Bay, just north of Dunedin.
