ASSISTANCE FUND

12,000 farmers want loans (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. About 12,000 farmers have so far applied for a $lOOO suspensory loan from the Special Agricultural Assistance Fund. Applications closed today. The Minister of Tourism (Mr Walker) told Parliament of this today on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Carter), in reply to a question from Mr C. J. Moyle (Lab., Mangere). About 60 per cent of the loans so far allocated had been to the Auckland-Ham-ilton area, he said. There would be no change in the criteria for loans as the fund ran out, he said, but the need for additional money to be made available was “under consideration.” About 17 per cent of applications had so far been declined.
