Gee 1st tour rider

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL.

The Wellington rider, D. G. Gee, stamped his class on the 1970 Rothmans Tour of Southland which finished at Inercargill on Saturday. He controlled both of the day’s stages magnificently and was an impressive over-all winner. In fact, his attack pushed B. Pascoe (Waikato), and R. Hogan (Auckland), back on general classification as T. McLeay (Invercargill), made a supreme effort to take the final stage and finish second over-all. Pascoe was third and Hogan, in the photograph above, fourth. B. Thomson (Dunedin), was fifth, and R. Bush (Canterbury), sixth. Gee never looked in danger of defeat, for he had a 21 second lead in the morning with two stages to ride. The Canterbury rider, B. G. Stockwell, withdrew from the last stage. Gee won the “king of the mountains” with .53 points and J. Broome the sprint with 16 points.
