School at Bethany

(N.Z. Prdss Association)

AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. A school for pregnant school-age girls at the Salvation Army Bethany Hospital in Grey Lynn was opened yesterday afternoon. Major T. Smith, the Salvation Army social services officer in Auckland, said the schoolroom would be available to school-age girls who were expecting babies, but who were not staying at the hospital. About 25 per cent of the girls at Bethany are between the ages of 12 and 17. "Because of their pregnancy, many girls drop out from school. We are hoping that by carrying on their education, some will decide to return to school after their babies are born,” she said.
