Wellington squash too strong for Canterbury

Wellington proved too strong all round for Canterbury in their inaugural interdistrict squash rackets match at Wellington yesterday, wining by the convincing margin of 17 matches to seven.

The Canterbury men kept their loss margin down to 7-9, but the women lost all their eight matches, the best effort of the series being Mrs R. Woodhead’s extending of the well-performed Miss K. Glenie to four games. The highlight of the men’s games was V. J. ■ W. Hargreaves’s win over the former

New Zealand representative and present North Island champion, J. N. Isaacs. Hargreaves maintained constant pressure on the ebullient Isaacs, overcoming a deficit of two games to one and showing much better match temperament to produce his finest touch play in the fifth game.

He almost had two wins as he led R. Sandilands by two games to love before missing several “sitters” which gave Sandilands the confidence he needed.

Earlier, D. R. Preston had avenged his loss to Sandilands in the Canterbury championships, looking particularly severe with his forehand volley. What was expected to be the needle match, Preston v. Isaacs, proved somewhat disappointing. Isaacs looked good for the first game, which he won, but from then on Preston was well in command as a tired Isaacs was unable to hit winners under the hot conditions.
