The United Nations Security Council today recommended unanimously to the General Assembly that Fiji be admitted as the 127th member of the world organisation. The Assembly is expected to endorse the recommendation on Tuesday. The council rejected United States procedural objections which could have delayed the new State’s admission by 35 days by having the Fijian request submitted to a membership committee. The Soviet Union has announced its recognition of Fiji as an independent and sovereign State and has expressed readiness to establish diplomatic relations, Tass reports from Moscow. The Soviet Premier (Mr Alexei Kosygin) has sent a telegram to the Fijian Prime Minister (Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara) offering heartfelt congratulations on the proclamation of Fiji’s independence, and his wishes for the prosperity and progress of the people.
