Fulton hits hard

A damp patch at the south end of the pitch, extending to little short of a length, did not appear to worry the early Old Collegians batsmen unduly. A. R. Hounsell took a wicket with the second ball of the match, but thereafter Fulton and his captain, D. S. Banks, fought back strongly Banks showed good application and Fulton, although lucky, played many fine, strong strokes. He had several escapes of various kinds, but attacked 1 whenever he could, hitting some splendid shots off his pads, and making some firm cuts.

By lunch, Old Collegians was 99 for three, and prospering. But the loss of Fulton brought about a collapse, to which two batsmen contributed with run outs. The pitch was a good one for early season, but M. L. Ryan’s wheedling flight brought good results, with only the pugnacious J. H. Dawson to hit £ack. Ryan was bowled when he let one from Dawson go, but C. L. Bull showed useful form. C. J. Stevens, however, laboured for runs in most uncharacteristic fashion and at close of play Old Boys had failed to assume control. N. F. Curtis, from a shortened run, bowled accurately, and so did T.
