SCHOOLS’ YACHTING

The Christchurch Boys’ High School J.C., Mirage, took a decisive lead in the annual Peter Mander Trophy inter-secondary schools’ yachting championship when it won the third heat at the Christchurch club on Satur-

day. Sailed by R. Smith and S. McIntosh, Mirage had a spirited duel with Quest (G. England and K. Welsh, Hagley High Schooli throughout the race, but opened up a 30sec advantage on the final leg Quest had alternated in the lead with Mirage, and actually led its rival around the last mark. But Mirage drew away on the beat to the finishing line. The Linwood High School entries, Kimihia (C. Price and M. Hay) and Amigo (C. Nordstom and B. Trethewey), filled the minor placings only 4sec apart, but they were more than 3min behind Quest. There was a rather disappointing fleet of only nine starters from six schools. Results:—

Mirage (R. Smith and S. McIntosh (C.8.H.5.), finishing time 1:24:00, 1; Quest (G. England and ' K. Welsh, Hagley H.S.). 1:24:33. 2; Kimihia (C. Price and M. Hay, Linwood H.S.), 1:27.50, 3; Amigo (C. Nordstom and B. Trethewev, Linwood H.S.), 1:27.54, 4.
