May breaks eight lifting records

An 18-year-oid Christchurch bank clerk, G. May, broke the Commonwealth heavyweight junior snatch record, three New’ Zealand senior heavy-weight records, and four New Zealand junior heavy-weight records at the Canterbury junior olympic-style lifting championships on Saturday.

May snatched 281 jib to beat the former record held ! by the Canadian Commonwealth Games silver medalist, R. Santaby. This lift also broke both the national senior and junior snatch record by a margin of 161 b. May went on to press 264 lb—an improvement of s|lb on his own national record.

Then he jerked a new senior and junior record of 347 j lb. This was sjlb better than both the senior and junior records in this lift. It was also 111 b better than the best jerk recorded by the present senior heavy-weight champion, R. Harris, of Wellington.

May’s total of 8921 b for the three lifts represents the massive improvement of 331 b on his previous junior heavyweight record total, and also beat the New Zealand senior heavy-weight record total by s|lb. His performance on Saturday places him in a strong position to take the senior heavy-weight championship from Harris at the senior championships in New Plymouth on October 23.
