Big show prize
What is believed to be the largest prize ever offered for any dairy class at an agricultural show in the southern hemisphere Will be awarded at the Royal Show in Palmerston North next year, according to the Press Association. To be called the Palmerston North centennial show, $2OOO Jersey Oaks, 1971, the prize will be sponsored by the Manawatu Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club. Mr R. R. Bond, the Jersey Oaks secretary, said that the first acceptances had closed and the pool now exceeded $2OOO. With the final acceptances due on August 31, 1971, the pool could exceed $3OOO. Entries which have come from Kaitaia to Canterbury, had exceeded all expectations, he said. There would also be a $5OO prize for the champion Jersey cow and also one service to the record-priced $16,000 sire Big Hollow Golden Meteor, owned by Tippett Brothers, of Hawera.
