Merivale Lane

Sir, —Most residents of Merivale Lane will welcome the concern of the Civic Trust to preserve the character and charm of its narrow section. They would welcome also some urgent official attention to a new factor —the fantastic increase in the traffic it carries day and night since it became a ready escape route from the heavy cross-town traffic on Bealey Avenue and Innes Road-Heaton Street. There are no traffic lights or signs anywhere along Merivale Lane to slow down traffic speeds. Making a cul-de-sac is no solution; it would leave only one way out, via Papanui Road already congested. At little cost the City Council could make life safer for us. Three schools in one block surely justify a few signs to indicate a local speed limit of say, 25 m.p.h. More "No Parking" signs on the north side which has no footpath, and reversing the "Give Way” signs at the Winchester Street corner would give us some expectancy of longer life.—Yours, etc., SAFETY FIRST.
