ACTION HINT ON ECONOMY

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 7. Further action on the economy was under active consideration by the Cabinet, the Associate Minister of Finance (Mr Pickering) said in Parliament today. He was replying to Mr R. O. Douglas (Lab., Manukau), who had asked if there was any truth in newspaper reports that the Government would take measures on the economy in the near future. Mr Pickering said action was under consideration, and it would be inappropriate for him to comment further. Asked by Mr A. J. Faulkner (Lab., Roskill) when the additional measures would be made public, Mr Pickering said he was not in a position to say. Mr Douglas asked what action the Government proposed to deal with the inflationary situation its policies had created. Mr Pickering said the policies had not created an inflationary situation but had tended to damp down the effects of a worldwide situation.
