Yew wins at Valley

The four-year-old Pakistan gelding, Yew, kept the New Zealand flag flying at Moonee Valiev on Saturday after Ahjay and Bompa had failed in the big race of the day, the John F. Feenhan Handicap. he J „ i^ kery ’ w D Skelton, •lifted” Yew over the line to win by a head the Windarra Handicap (6f). Magic Ruler and Sugader dead-heated for second. Yew’s run was his first in Australia He earned $2BOO for Messrs W. and T. Young, of Palmerston North, who arrived -5 in Melbourne on race-morning. Mr W. Young is a steward of the Manawatu Racing Club. Ahjay and Bompa were big disappointments in the Feenhan Handicap, one mile. Ahjay, the favourite, led for much of the race but stopped quickly about three furlongs from home when challenges were made. \ Bompa was caught on the rails but had sufficient room to go through had he been good enough. Shorengro won the race for the third year in succession. He fought off determined bids by Summer Fire (Summertime— Astrid) and Nana Tale to win by a neck, with a short halfhead separating the other two. Ahjay (G. Carson) finished seventh of the nine horses, and Bompa (Skelton) eighth. GERALDINE RACING CLUB Acceptances for the Spring Meeting to be held on Monday.
