A penalty goal kept Leeds United at the top of the English first division soccer table on Saturday, hut the secondplaced Manchester City stepped up pressure with a dazzling fourgoal display. Leeds scrambled to a 1-0 win over Southampton ’ with a firsthalf penalty by J. GUes, after R. Davies had earlier missed a penalty for Southampton. The fiercely-contested match erupted in the last five minutes when Southampton's Scottish skipper, J. Gabriel, was sent off—leaving on a stretcher—after clashing with A. Clarke. Manchester City maintained its unbeaten record with a 4-1 win over Stoke City, which had defeated Leeds the previous week. Leeds heads the first division with 15 points, Manchester is a point behind, and with a game in hand, Arsenal has 13 points, and Liverpool, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Chelsea are all on The biggest shock of the day came in Scotland, where Celtic, previously unbeaten in its bid to win the league championship for the sixth successive season, was beaten, 2-0, by Hibernian. Rangers, defeated by Celtic the previous week, bounced back with a 5-0 win over Cowdenbeath.
