Record numbers at soccer Youth Day
A record crowd to watch the knock-out finals and a record number of boys (more than 2000) taking part in the grand parade marked the annual soccer Youth Day at Burnside Park on Saturday. The Verlander Trophy, awarded to the club turning Out the highest percentage of Its members, and based also on dress and appearance, was won by Burndale United. Of the 427 boys on its books this year (making the club probably- the biggest in New Zealand, Certainly In the South Island), 382 appeared in the parade. Burndale also won the McAnaulty Trophy for the most points scored by one club during the season in the junior competitions. Before making the presentations, the president of the Canterbury F.A. (Mr T. C. Gotter: meyer) paid a tribute to the officials of the Junior F.A. for the high-class organisation of the day, and to the players for the standard of the football they had produced. Results of the finals were:— Fourth Grade.—Brighton 5, Shamrock 3.
Fifth Grade.—Rangers . 2, Brighton 0. Sixth Grade.—Christchurch I City 5, Shamrock 1. ’ Seventh Grade.—Western 1, Shirley-Nomads 0. Eighth Grade.—Western 2, Burndale 1. Ninth Grade.—Christchurch City 1, Rangers 1 (trophy shared). Tenth Grade.—Rangers 1, Burndale 0. ■ Eleventh Grade.-rßutndale 4, Shamrock 0. Twelfth Grade.—Burndale 0, Rangers 0 (trophy shared). Final won in extra time Gaining two corners in extra time after the scores had been level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, Burndale United beat Christchurch City in the final of the division three soccer knock-out competition on Saturday. In the annual match for the George Cox Cup at English Park, Soccer Referees beat Rugby Referees, 3-1.
