Conference to study role of teachers
The future role of teachers’ organisations, and the methods by which greater co-opera-tion may be established between them, will be among points discussed in Christchurch this week-end at the annual conference of the New Zealand Teachers’ Colleges Association.
Also to be considered will be the future role of teaching organisations in their relationship with the Education Department. ' The association will examine the progress being made [in consultations with the I Government on study leave
for teachers' college lecturers and the stages reached in submissions before the Minister of Education (Mr Talboys) relating to the recognition of the association as a negotiating body on behalf [of staff in the country’s 10 [teachers’ colleges.
i The executive of the Teachiears’ Colleges Association, [which held a pre-conference ; meeting last evening is led Iby the national president, Mr A. Cargo, a principal lecturer at the secondary division of Christchurch Teachers’ College. Mr Cargo has held the position for the last two years and when the annual meeting of the association is held this morning the new president (Mr D. Cohen, the principal lecturer at Hamilton Teachers’ College) will take over.
This morning’s session will be addressed by Dr W. Clark chairman of the University of Canterbury Association of University Teachers. Also in attendance will be the national president of the Association of Teachers in Technical Institutes (Mr J. D. A.| Hercus, of Christchurch). '
