Cycling For Health
Sir, —Many doctors see in cycling a way to combat the tensions and diseases associated with a chair-borne, pushbutton existence. The noted American heart consultant, Dr Paul Dudley White, a bicycle enthusiast since boyhood, says: “Boys and girls used to get exercise walking to school, running errands, roller skating and riding bicycles. Nowadays they spend a great deal more time just sitting in the family car, in school buses and in front of television sets.” An article in the British Medical Association’s magazine says that children will fall victims to coronary thrombosis at an early age unless the current trend of , driving the children everywhere is stopped. When the bundles are heavy, the rain falls or night descends, I am grateful for the solid comfort of the car. When long journeys are called for, I welcome the train and the aeroplane. But the rest of the time to remind myself 1 am alive I’ll stick to the bike or walk.— Yours, etc., ANGINA. September 5, 1970.
