Eradication Of White Racism
The eradication of white racism was accepted by the National Council of Churches at its annual meeting in Christchurch yesterday as a major objective for New Zealand in the 19705. The Rev. W, S. Dawson, minister of the Durham Street Methodist Church in Christchurch and the past president of the council, who presented a recommendation to this effect, said that throughout the world there was a growing awareness that racism was no longer accepted. „ , “Here in New Zealand we are conscious of elements, and even growing elements, of white racism,” he said. The Rev. A. Gnanasunderam, secretary of the council’s Commission on Church and Society, said that New Zealand was very proud of its reputation in the world in race relations. When New Zealanders thought of racism, they automatically thought of what happened in countries such as South Africa and the United States. . While the problems in New Zealand were immensely different, it did not mean that they would be ignored, he said.
