Oral Contraceptives

Sir,—To allay the fear and despondency that will certainly be caused by the misleading emphasis given to a report of three deaths last year from the “pill” in yesterday’s issue, may I point out that, according to the numbers prescribed, over 136,000 women in New Zealand are now using this form of contraception. Thus, one’s chances of dying, from pregnancy itself, or from a traffic accident, or, if one is a smoker, from cancer of the lung, are far greater than from the effects of this hor mone combination, which controls reproduction with absolute surety for the first time in man’s history.—Yours, W. M. PLATTS. September 3, 1970.
