FEROCIOUS RUCKING.—The line-umpire appears to be sprinting for safety as a furious ruck takes place during the Canterbury-Waikato match for the Ranfurly Shield last Saturday. But, in fact, the umpire had been behind the posts for a kick at goal by W. J. Lewis, the Canterbury full-hack. The ball ricocheted off both uprights and rebounded into the field of play, where the Canterbury forwards dived into the ruck after their captain, I. H. Penrose, with relish. The forward disappearing head first into the middle of the ruck is R. W. Norton, the Canterbury hooker. Canterbury’s approach to rucking exemplified the team’s determination to hold the shield.
