Ashburton Competitions Festival Concludes

The Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival concluded yesterday with 22 classes in the dancing section finalised during the morning and afternoon sessions, and the demonstration concert in the evening at which 33 of the prize-winning performances during the week of the festival were repeated in an outstanding performance in the Ashburton R.S.A. Hall. '

Among the classes in the final, sessions were a number of outstanding performances by competitors in the youngest age groups. The judge of the national dancing (Mrs B. Rout, of Dunedin), particularly mentioned the sailor’s hornpipe, under 10. and the Highland fling, under eight. The sailor’s hornpipe was won by Mary Johnston, of Oamaru, and Mrs Rout said she had shown excellent timing and interpretation of movement in her steps. The class had produced a high standard for such young competitors. The Highland fling, under eight years, was won by Tracey Journee, of Christchurch. in a class of 21 competitors. Competition was so keen that only one point separated each of the first four place-getters. Although the class was small, the over-all standard was high in the Highland fling, under 14, won by Heather Wheeler, of Outram.

In the last class of the competitions yesterday, the song and dance duo; under 12, the understanding and regular practice together by sisters was evident, as sisters gained the first two placings. They were Pamela and Patricia Hermansen, of Christchurch. and Jackie »and Donna Pratley. There were 20 entries and the judge (Mrs Margaret Hamilton, of Christchurch), said the standard was high.
