Chatham Islands Freight Rates

Sir,—The above subject seems to be receiving rather more than its share of publicity these days. It has just occurred to me that by far the most appropriate comparison that could be made between freight rates from New Zealand to the Chathams is the rate between New Zealand and Norfolk Island. The Norfolk Island service is operated from Auckland or Onehunga and is in distance almost identical with that to the Chatham Islands. The freight rate on general to Norfolk Island is $37.50, which has been charged by companies other than our own recently plying to Norfolk Island, from which trade we withdrew several years ago (though we have recently sent one ship up there). It will be seen that this rate is considerably higher than the general cargo rate to the Chatham Islands. 1 am wondering why it is that Mr Smith quoted the rate to Tonga rather than to Norfolk, particularly as I am sure Mr Smith knows Norfolk Island very well and has, I believe, property there as well as at the Chatham Islands, and it would, therefore, seem almost certain that he knows both freight rates.—Yours, etc., J. F. HOLM, Managing Director, Holm Shipping Company, Ltd. Wellington, September 2, 1970.
