The Inland Revenue Department is sympathetic to polecats, rats, geckos, spiders, opossums, and two Doberman pinschers. It has approved a claim of $146 for their food and travelling expenses. Mrs N. M. Smith, a natural science lecturer at the Auckland Teachers' College asked the department for tax relief because she uses her collection for lectures at the college. At times she has up to 100 animals to
feed and house, and once had 500. It costs Mrs Smith about $2.51 a week to feed her collection on carrots, cabbage, milk, cheese, and meat. Occasionally the rats have a special treat of wafer biscuits, but Mrs Smith did not claim for luxuries. Mrs Smith also did not claim for caging. The department says this is included in capital expenditure. But her caging problems will be solved when an animal house is completed at the college.
