HIGHLIGHTS OF TRAINING Intrepid Impresses At Addington

Intrepid, one of the favourites for the A. E. Laing Handicap tomorrow, gave a sound display at Addington Raceway yesterday morning. Others to work pleasingly included the stablemates, Royal Ascot and Manaroa, and also Darcy. Intrepid went comfortably throughout 12 furlongs in 3min 18 l-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 2 3-ssec, and the final quarter in HOsec. He should make a forward showing tomorrow. Manaroa and Manawaru finished clear of Flying Tutta at the end of their 12 furlongs in 3min 25 l-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 1-5 sec. Manaroa will not start in the main race tomorrow. Copper Braid made the pace and finished ahead of Bos Beiaard, which got up to shade Sam Tryax, at the end of 12 furlongs in Smin Slsec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 3-ssec, and the final quarter In 31 2-ssec.

Darcy and Restabell followed In 3min 16sec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 32 4-ssec. Both were being eased at the end. Rauka Lad and Forest King, the favourite bracket for the Oxford Stakes tomorrow, went easily throughout two miles in 4min 38 2-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 2 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 2-ssec. Both look in great heart. Royal Step. Royal Ascot and Little Marvell finished together at the end of an easy 12 furlongs in 3min 25 2-ssec. They took Imin 6 4-ssec for the final half-mile and 31 4-ssec for the last quarter. All three were travelling comfortably at the finish. Refluent and Master Regan took 3min 27 4-ssec for their 12 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 3 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 31sec. Refluent was going particularly well at the end. Pine Globe and Lady Glenys finished together at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 24sec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 1-5 sec. Al Mundy finished half a length in front of Monroe, with Highland Hal not far away at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 21sec, the last half-mile in Imin 2 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 2-ssec. Al Mundy has worked most impressively in the last month, but his race efforts have been disappointing. Cambridge The good gallopers," Pell Mell and Alison, from W. J. Bromby’s team showed they are making heartening progress on new preparations when they gal-

loped five furlongs in the third fastest time of tne morning. They clocked Imin 4 l-ssec working 20ft out on the course, proper. Pell Mell, on the outside, finished a neck ahead. They took 38 2-ssec for the last th GoM Height's Imin 2 3-ssec in the final training for Avondale was the best of the morning. Pell Mell and Gold Heights both look in great order and they will have an outing at next Tuesday's Ohinemuri barrier trials at Paeroa to further their preparations.—Cambridge correspondent.

Worthy Son and Turf Pal were evenly matched over six furlongs in Imin 19sec, the last three taking 39 3-Ssec. They will meet in the Moutoa Hack. Crepe De Chine, which continues to please, had a lot in reserve after six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec, the last three in 41 sec. The hurdler, Phil’s Delight, ran three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. He should be hard to beat again in the Gonville Hurdles.

The South Islander, Sherlocks, did a circuit of the course proper, and Amicos had a lot in reserve at the finish of a half mile in 54 2-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 40 3-ssec. He is poised for instant maiden graduation. His Lordship ran over a circuit, at three-quarter pace. He looks well but may need tomorrow’s outing.—Wanganui correspondent.

Riccarton Watchman raised hopes of a top-weight's victory In the open sprint at Ashburton next Tuesday when he galloped impressively at speed with Meldie at Riccarton yesterday. Watchman, with his Spring Handicap rider, D. Reed, up, was paired with Meldie (D. Tucker) for six furlongs. They ran together throughout, recorded Imin 18 3-ssec for the distance and came the last three in 39 4-ssec. Meldie is not engaged on the first day of the meeting but has been entered for the Ashburton Cup tomorrow week. Although conditions were ideal all the fast work was held on the No. 7 grass and times were generally very ordinary. The next best sixes of the morning were almost two seconds slower than the time recorded by Watchman and Meldie. Lord Macquario (P. Smith) was shading Pretentious (P. Thistoll) with Flower Girl (R. McCann) two lengths away ending their gallop in Imin 20 2-5 sec, the last three in 40 2-ssec. Lincoln’s Inn (G. Mein) and Savoir Faire (P. Smith) did well for maidens to equal this time and run their last three in 40 Euripydies (P. Smith) drew out to beat Magic Man (D. Meier) by three lengths in the last furlong and a half of six. It took them Imin 23sec for the distance but the pace quickened slightly for the last three in 40 4-ssec. Quetta (D. Sanderson), Harold

Bank (M Skelton) and David William (G. Lee) finished six turlonga in close order. It was an easy, oven gallop. They took Imin 24 4-Ssec for the distance and ran the last three in 41 1-S sec.

Kiowa (F. Skelton) led Aconite (M. Skelton) by half a length after running the last three of four furlongs in 39 4-ssec. This time was equalled by Overnight (D. Tucker) and El Ciego (D. Reed) for the last three furlongs of their work. Pericles (D. Meier) ran in from the three in 39 3-ssec and Meneleus improved on this time by one-fifth of a second for a similar trial. Royal Blue (H. Reuben) and Aeolian (G. Mein) made the best time for three furlongs They ran home in 38 2-ssec. Lord Nelson (R. McCann) also made good time over the distance. His solo effort took 38 3-Ssec. Igloo (L. Didham) took 39sec for his three furlongs and Haxton (P. Smith) and Pleasure Pal (D. Meier) completed a similar task in 39 3-ssec. Elvia Spark (D. Tucker) and Foxtail (Miss J. Rennie) ran the last three of an easy five furlongs in 40sec.

Hastings Devante, which appears te have an excellent chance in the Sewell Handicap at Wanganui, worked impressively over five furlongs. Carlos, which is balloted out of the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui,-was another to work well, and the Gisborne runners, Tosh and Emir, were responsible for sound trials. On the plough, which was in excellent order, Red Nib (L. Carston) and Pretty Cockie (J. Panapa) ran five furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec with Red Nib doing it easily. -- Devante (D. Thomas) went alone over five furlongs in Imin ssec, the last three taking 38 2-ssec. She might be hard to beat at Wanganui, as she had a lot in hand and has improved. Emir (Pocock) ran the last half mile of 11 furlongs in 54 sec, the last three taking 40 2-ssec. He is very solid and has better than an outside chance in the Ferguson Gold Cup. Tosh (Pocock) ran three furlongs in 3Ssec. He has done well since Foxton where he finished fourth, and makes very strong anpeal for the Whatatutu Hurdles at Gisborne. Carlos (D. Withington) and Grande (R. Marsh) were sent five furlongs and their time of Imin Ssec was excellent. They ran the final three furlongs in 38sec.—Hastings correspondent. Woodville Two Guineas candidates came through their final trials quite impressively yesterday, each running six furlongs with a bit in reserve. Swat had the more searching test, being sent with the open

■printer. General Myth. Shaheen galloped alone and loafed over the first two or three furlongs. Swat’s six took him Imln 21 4-Ssec and he looked impressive over the last three, with Boses Red joining in too, in 41 1-Ssec. There was not much to choose between Swat and General Myth, both of which appear likely to run prominently at Wanganui. Shaheen has lost a little condition since he raced last Saturday but be is eating well and perhaps he will be all the better tor it. He pulled up well after his six in Imln 24sec, the last three in 41 4-ssec. High Vita was quite impressive running a mile in Imln SSsec and finishing it a bit too well for Free Pass which joined in over the last six in Imin 23Jsec. —Woodville correspondent.

Awapuni Awapunl will have few horses racing at Wanganui tomorrow though the tempo should quicken a little with the Marton meeting next week. Vice Consul (Gonvllle Hurdles) and Sweet Bourbon (Moutoa Hack Handicap) would have been two fancied runners but both are doubtful starters according to their respective trainers. The only gallop of much consequence was the five furlongs on the inside trial by Ayub Khan, which shaded Silver Knight in Imin 3fsec, the last three in 37 3-ssec. Ayub Khan will make a fresh start in the Sewell Handicap. Silver Knight has no form to recommend him for the Wanganui Guineas but he should run a fairly good mile on a better track than he struck at Foxton. The promising gallopers, Dalrlad and Breathalyser, covered six furlongs strongly in Imin 18sec, the last three in 38sec. On the plough Werts ran six furlongs in imin 23sec, the last three in 41 2-ssed. and Shore Line took 38 3-ssec for the final three after going two rounds. Aristoc recorded 42sec for a similar task and is another making good progress. Three Tops and Rommel gave a satisfactory display over four hurdles though Tree Tops did not jump the last at all well. —Palmerston North correspondent. Wanganui The Awamutu trainer, W. Sanders, might have a good innings at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting tomorrow. His team, headed by Oddfellow and Fairview La'd, was seen to distinct advanta ke In training yesterday. Work was held on the No. 1 grass, which was soft after rain earlier in the week. Oddfellow ran a rousing solo six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, running on strongly over the final three in 38 2-ssec. Though he has a sprint back-

ground, Oddfellow has previously starred at a middle distance. He looks In the right order for. the Higgle Handicap.

The Guineas contender, Fairview Lad. easily headed the maiden, The Shan, over six furlongs in imin 17sec, the last three requiring 39<sec. Fairview Lad took a beating at Tauherenikau but the angular course did not help him. Wanganui should be more to his liking.

Time honours went to another Sanders representative, Ursalass, which accompanied the Guineas entry. Altar Boy, over a nippy six in Imin 15-3-5, the last three in 39jsec. This was a fine effort under the conditions. Ursalass will be a worth-while proposition in the Spring Hack Handicap.

Wingatui Beau Bevan and Miss Slick, rival candidates for the TallyHo Handicap, drew attention to their prospects when they worked well. The trials were held under ideal conditions on the inside grass, which was soft, and the sand which was firm. Beau Bevan, ridden by his trainer, R. K. Moir, and working on the grass, reeled off half a mile in 52 l-ssec, the first furlong in 12 l-ssec. Beladin (D. Parr) was not ridden out over the same ground in 54 4-ssec, the first furlong in 13 3-ssec. Gay Gabador (P. J. Silver) and Watallan (B. J. Anderton) were not out for time over five furlongs in Imin 8 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 26 3-ssec. Bosa Nova (J. R. Brown) covered the distance in Imin 9sec, the first two furlongs in 26 3-5 sec. Miss Slick, ridden by her trainer, H. J. Powell, was under a good hold when she completed a round of pace work on the sand by sprinting home the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. Kindle (P. J. Silver) and Abolight (E. J. Didham) ran five furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec, the first two furlongs in 54 4-ssec. Kindle has not raced since she was galloped on in the Pencarrow Hack Handicap at the Wellington Cup meeting, but she is due to make a fresh start at Ashburton.—Dunedin correspondent. Invercargill Stormy Seas, whose next appearance will be in the John Grigg Stakes nt Ashburton on September 12, was sent north yesterday. He will be quartered at Wingatui for a week before going on to Ashburton where he will again be ridden by J. D. Pankhurst. He was one of the few horses to work on the course proper yesterday, when he was paired with the novice, Persian Count, over half a mile. in from the three furlongs in 42 sec, the first furlong in IS 2-ssec and Stormy Seas was under' a firm hold. The track was easy after a sharp frost and the tresles were 30 feet out. Stormy Seas has really thrived since his racing at Riccarton last month.—lnvercargill correspondent.
