BUYING INTEREST REVIVED IN MARKET LEADERS

Rises and falls were about equal on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday but buying interest in some of the leaders resulted in a small rally. The Australian list was easier on balance.

N.Z. Forest Products was well supported after its recent weaker term and the market realising that the loss of the timber contract wasn’t so bad for the company after all, marked the shares up 7c to 412 c. Carter Consolidated continued to firm, gaining 5c to 160 c. There was quite heavy turnover as profit takers sold into strength. Ballins Breweries was not traded but the quotes took into account the 1 for 5 bonus announcement. Charles Begg’s shares were traded 5c lower at 35c with the weakness showing in the quotes, buyers were offering 32c at the close, which indicates there may be worse to come. L and M Oil. was marked down a further 3c to 59c.
