Spending On Roads
Contrary to popular belief, total National Roads Board roading expenditure has declined as a proportion of national product, says the latest issue of the board’s Road Research Unit Newsletter. i
Expenditure on the basis of cents per vehicle mile has fallen from a high of 1.504 c in 1957 to an estimated 1.17 c this year, and on a ton-mile basis it has fallen from 4.650 c in 1957 to 2.98 c. When it is realised that during the same period the motor-vehicle fleet has doubled and that roads are fatigue structures that wear out at an accelerating rate as loads increase, it is clear that current trends are adverse, and unlikely to sustain the drive for higher levels of production, the newsletter says.
THE HILLMAN Avenger is now outselling both the Vauxhall Viva and the British Leyland Mini in Britain.
