Mr W. J. Scott’s Address

Sir,—A very fair report of Mr W. J- Scott’s addres given at the W.E.A. International Education Year lecture, when Mr Scott outlined the "Strengths and Weaknesses of New Zealand Education” was contained in today’s issue. However, the headline which introduced the report was misleading: "Teachers blamed

for backward adolescents.” Mr Scott did not hold teachers to be responsible for the shortcomings of a system which, as your report states, sends adolescents “out unqualified and emotionally spoiled, to do less work for their community, and live in it less successfully. than they should.” As he said, the educational raven does not quoth “Nevermore,” but “Not Enough" This cannot be the responsibility of teachers themselves. —Yours, etc, (MRS) JOAN RYAN, President. Canterbury W.E.A. August 27, 1970.
