A Bad Practice
It is an offence under the Meat Regulations, 1969, for anyone to send rick stock to a freezing works for slaughter. Quite a number of people offended in this respect without perhaps realising the significance >f their action, Dr J. H. Sloomberg, supervising veterinarian for the Department of Agriculture it the Islington works of :he New Zealand Refrigeriting Company, said this week.
Dr Bloomberg said that inimals affected with dinical salmonellosis, in particular, should not be lent to works. Any animal
suffering from "scours” was a risk, he added. Salmonella showed up essentially In the form of acute scours and the affected animal wasted away very quickly, could become very ill and die quite quickly.
Sending animals of this type to a freezing works was a threat to the high standing of the country in the meat export field, and as well the extra work involved in destroying and burning the condemned animal and disinfecting the yards and isolating the area all added up to a very good reason for farmers to refrain from this practice.
