RICCARTON H.S.
Gas Supply
Wanted
A three-stage plan for the reticulation of Riccarton High School with a gas supply was outlined at a meeting of the school’s board of governors and it was decided to ask the Department of Education to make a grant for the work. A quotation of $2812 had been given for the first stage, which involved supplying gas to several classrooms, science laboratories and the engineering workshop. The other two stages, which were not so important, were the supply of gas heating to the library at a cost of $295, and gas cooking facilities for the homecraft room at a cost of $616, said the headmaster (Mr T. R. Hitchings). The primary reason for the proposal was the unsatisfactory nature of the heating appliances in the engineering workshop, but other rooms would benefit also if a town gas supply was laid on. At present gas had to be purchased in drums for workshop use and to have a regular supply would be cheaper and more efficient, he said. When the school was built the town gas supply did not extend so far out but it did now, and it would not be unreasonable to ask the department to provide the service. Tliis would give the school the kind of facilities almost all the other high schools had, Mr Hitcbings said.
