BANGKOK, August 27..
Thailand has begun negotiations with the Saigon Government for the withdrawal of 12,000 Thai combat troops serving in South Vietnam, the Prime Minister (Field • Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn) said in Bangkok today.
Marshal Thanom told reporters before attending Parliament that Thailand had told Saigon it wanted to bring these troops back to Thailand to reinforce provinces on the
border with Cambodia and Laos.
The Prime Minister said that the situation was critical in the border areas and it had become necessary to strengthen their defences. Battle-tested Thai troops now in Vietnam would be most suitable for the defence of the Thai, nation against Communist aggression, he said. Marshal Thanom said Thai and South Vietnamese author ities were already working out details of the withdrawal of the Thai troops. The Prime Minister added that American troops, mostly airmen, to be withdrawn from Thailand by next year would not number more than 10,000 men. The United States Ambassador to Thailand (Mr Leonard Unger), resumed talks on August 18 for the second phased withdrawal of 42,000 American troops remaining in Thailand.
