New York Dustmen Go For Plastic

The city of New York has modified its health code to permit the use of plastic and paper refuse bags, after extensive field tests. Mayor Lindsay said he was proposing a change in the housing maintenance code to permit use of the bags. The Mayor said: “At present, sanitation men waste much of their energy fighting the garbage can and not tiie garbage., “To load 81M pounds of refuse, the average sanitation loader carries 3100 pounds of cans over to the truck and back to the kerb, every day, to no good purpose. “During our experiment, we found that the bags helped the sanitation crews complete their routes 20 per cent fkster, with fewer risks of back injuries, injuries from the cans themselves and injuries at the back of the collection truck. “Most home owners liked the bags. In general, they made refuse collections cleaner, quieter and more convenient”
